Rob O. These are beautiful, mesmerizing compositions! Getting away from the funk of his earlier releases Morten begins to embark on a journey of sophistication and a carefully crafted, harmonic, songwriting style that displays maturity. While his previous album Conveyance paid homage to classic jazz, Unicorn is more fleshed out with Morten finding his unique voice. Love this guy!

about

This album was recorded in Copenhagen November 2012 and later in Morocco in March 2013. The music is based upon Morten Schantz' trio adding a strong emphasis on percussion grooves as well as introducing World music sensibilities.

Press quotes:

… It’s an intoxicating concoction that marks a high point in the
pianist’s career to date. His pronounced two-handed technique on
flowing solos embraces both classical and jazz vocabulary and is
evocative of Brad Mehldau at his mercurial best…
Ian Patterson, All About Jazz (US online reviews)

…A masterpiece of an instrumental jazz album with the sound of
Morocco as a backdrop… The music on “Unicorn” has the same in-
your-face, progressive, repetitive character as on the albums of
E.S.T. The album is a formidable, complete, and compelling effort…
Ivan Rod, Gaffa (Danish magazine and online)

…Unicorn marks an immediate highlight of Schantz’ career. Unicorn
might just candidate for Album of the Year…
Niels Overgaard, Jazznyt (Danish jazz blogger/critic)

… Harmonic compelling, rhythmically bullet-proof and with a
sophisticated sense of melody that thrils me with each listening...
Niels Christensen, Jazz Special (Danish magazine)
